Understanding Autism & Neurodiversity
Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that influences how individuals experience the world, communicate, process information, and interact with others. Autism exists on a spectrum, meaning every autistic person has their own unique combination of strengths, interests, communication styles, and support needs.
Many autistic individuals experience differences in sensory processing, social communication, routines, emotional regulation, executive functioning, or flexibility. Some children may need significant daily support, while others may require only occasional accommodations.
Being autistic is not something that needs to be "fixed." Instead, therapy focuses on helping children better understand themselves, develop practical skills, strengthen relationships, and navigate environments that may not always meet their needs.

What Is Neurodiversity?
Neurodiversity recognizes that human brains naturally develop and function in many different ways. Rather than viewing neurological differences as deficits, neurodiversity emphasizes understanding, acceptance, and individualized support.
Examples of neurodivergence include:
Autism
Dyslexia
Dyspraxia
Tourette Syndrome
Sensory Processing Differences
Every neurodivergent child brings unique strengths, perspectives, creativity, and ways of learning. Therapy helps children build upon those strengths while developing skills that increase independence, confidence, and emotional well-being.
Common Signs of Autism
Every autistic child is unique, and no two children will exhibit the same characteristics. Some children may show many signs of autism, while others display only a few. These traits can range from subtle to more noticeable and may change as a child grows and develops.
It's also important to remember that many children display one or two of these behaviors from time to time. Autism is identified by looking at the overall pattern of development, communication, social interaction, and behavior—not by one characteristic alone. If you have concerns about your child's development, speaking with your pediatrician or a qualified mental health professional can help determine whether a comprehensive evaluation is appropriate.

At Nurture Nest Play Therapy and Counseling, we are committed to helping children and families thrive. Let us help you and your child achieve your goals and reach your full potential through our Autplay therapy services.
“Every child deserves to be understood for who they are—not compared to who others expect them to be. Our role is to build on each child’s strengths while helping them develop the skills they need to thrive.”
Parent Involvement Matters
Parents are essential members of the therapy team.
Throughout treatment, families receive guidance, education, and practical strategies they can use at home to strengthen emotional regulation, improve communication, support daily routines, and encourage continued growth between therapy sessions.

Traditional Child-Centered Play Therapy allows children to naturally express themselves through play while the therapist follows the child's lead. AutPlay® Therapy incorporates many of these same therapeutic principles but adds structured, evidence-informed interventions specifically designed for neurodivergent children. Sessions may include activities that target social communication, emotional regulation, executive functioning, sensory regulation, and daily living skills while still maintaining a fun, engaging, and relationship-focused environment.
-
No. A formal autism diagnosis is not required. AutPlay® Therapy may benefit children who demonstrate characteristics of autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, social communication challenges, emotional regulation difficulties, executive functioning concerns, or other neurodevelopmental differences. During the initial assessment, your therapist will work with you to determine whether AutPlay® Therapy is an appropriate treatment approach for your child.
-
Yes. Although AutPlay® was originally developed to support autistic children, it has become an effective therapeutic approach for many children with ADHD. Therapy can help children improve emotional regulation, frustration tolerance, impulse control, executive functioning, attention, flexibility, social skills, and problem-solving while building confidence through play-based learning.
-
We offer flexible pricing based on project type and complexity. After an initial conversation, we’ll provide a transparent quote with no hidden costs.
-
AutPlay® Therapy is appropriate for children and adolescents of many ages, with interventions tailored to each child's developmental level, interests, and individual needs. Because every child is unique, therapy is customized to match their communication style, emotional development, cognitive abilities, and personal goals. During your initial appointment, your therapist will determine whether AutPlay® Therapy is the best fit for your child.
-
In many cases, yes. AutPlay® Therapy is typically billed using standard mental health counseling or Play Therapy service codes rather than a separate AutPlay-specific code. Coverage depends on your insurance plan, diagnosis, and medical necessity. Our administrative team is happy to verify your insurance benefits, explain your coverage, and answer questions before your first appointment.
-
Many autistic and neurodivergent children also experience anxiety, and AutPlay® Therapy is designed to address the whole child—not just one diagnosis. Therapy may help children recognize anxious feelings, develop coping strategies, build emotional regulation skills, increase flexibility during stressful situations, and improve confidence in navigating everyday challenges. Treatment is individualized to support your child's unique combination of strengths and needs.
-
The length of therapy varies depending on your child's goals, strengths, and support needs. Some children benefit from short-term, goal-focused therapy, while others benefit from longer-term support as they continue developing social, emotional, and executive functioning skills. Your therapist will regularly review progress with you and adjust treatment recommendations as your child grows and reaches new milestones.
-
If your child struggles with social communication, emotional regulation, sensory processing, flexibility, executive functioning, anxiety, ADHD, or navigating daily routines, AutPlay® Therapy may be an excellent fit. The best way to determine the right treatment approach is through an initial consultation, where one of our therapists will learn about your child's strengths, challenges, and goals before making personalized recommendations.
-
Most children look forward to AutPlay® Therapy because learning happens through play, creativity, movement, games, and activities that match their interests. Our therapists strive to create a safe, accepting environment where children feel understood, respected, and empowered to learn new skills at their own pace. When therapy is engaging and meaningful, children are more likely to participate, build relationships, and experience lasting growth.
